Design studio COMANDI-Corres has introduced RolTine 2.0, a pocket-sized measuring invention machined from aerospace-grade alloy that handles both flat spans and irregular curves. Built in Kowloon, the compact device eliminates the bulk of conventional contractor tools by combining a flexible tape with a rolling dial. Backers have already committed over $115,000 to the project, highlighting demand for durable everyday carry instruments.

Dual Measuring Modes for Flat Surfaces and Contours

Traditional tape measures struggle with curved edges, cylinders, and irregular contours. According to Yanko Design, the RolTine 2.0 invention resolves this limitation by offering two separate measurement interfaces on a chassis measuring 46 mm in diameter and 18 mm in thickness.

One side houses a standard 150 cm flexible tape laser-etched with metric indicators on one side and imperial units on the other, allowing users to switch standards by flipping the blade. The opposite face features a rolling wheel with a fixed 150 mm circumference mounted on miniature rolling bearings. Users determine surface length along curves or complex contours by multiplying full wheel rotations by the base circumference and adding the final dial reading.

Aerospace Alloy and Damped Spring Mechanics

The body of the device is milled from Grade 5 titanium (Ti-6Al-4V), an alloy common in space hardware, jet engine compressor blades and surgical implants due to its tensile strength of nearly 1,000 MPa, as detailed by Yanko Design. Through five-axis CNC machining, the shell features skeletonized cutouts that expose the mechanical interior, prevent dust accumulation, and reveal an anodized inner liner offered in Electric Yellow or Glacial Blue.

Unlike the first iteration of the tool, which required an external release button, inventor and developer COMANDI-Corres redesigned the internal mechanism for version 2.0. This mechanical innovation integrates a calibrated spring assembly and tuned damping, snapping the flexible tape back smoothly without the violent recoil typical of standard construction tape measures.

Magnetic Docking, Engraved Scales, and Illumination

To enhance workshop usability, the chassis embeds an N52 neodymium magnet on its rear face, enabling secure attachment to steel machinery, PC towers, toolboxes, and automotive frames without slipping during heavy vibrations, reports Yanko Design. All measurement increments are cut directly into the titanium metal rather than printed, preventing wear from repeated handling.

The commercial product, launched under the RolTine trademark with patent protection in mind, also includes slots for ambient-light-charged luminous vials or self-powered tritium gas tubes in six colours, providing low-light visibility for over a decade. Campaign units are priced from roughly $69 to $75 against a standard list price of $130, with delivery rolling out following the crowdfunding phase organized by the startup.
