It was a success the first attempt of quantum communication through an encrypted video call: will it be the future of information?
The first experiment was a success. During the final ceremony of the EuroScience Open Forum 2020 in Trieste, the first encrypted fiber optic communication with Italian quantum technology took place. The experiment was conducted by the “Quantum Communications” group of the National Research Council (CNR). The two interlocutors were the Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte and the Rector of the University of Trieste Roberto di Lenarda. The test is part of the Quantum FVG project, managed and coordinated by the University of Trieste, with the collaboration of LightNet and Cnr-Ino. The objective is to create a regional quantum communication network on optical fiber. It is an approach to the world of telecommunications that uses peculiar properties of quantum mechanics in the key exchange phase. The objective is to avoid that this can be intercepted by an attacker without the other two parties noticing it. The first working quantum cryptographic network was the DARPA Quantum Network.

Encrypted video call: the first quantum communication in Italy
For the experiment in Trieste a stretch of about 10 km of optical fiber from the regional Lightnet research network was used. Two copies of the same cryptographic key (sequence of random numbers used once) for sender and recipient of the message were used. “As President of the Council of Ministers – said Premier Giuseppe Conte – I am particularly interested in this further advancement of the investigations in the field of quantum mechanics. The major threats today are not so much those related to invasion by others, foreign armies and weapons, but the hybrid threats, cybernetic threats, are much more insidious than in the past because they can undermine the functionality of our equipment. The country could be brought to its knees without any foreign weapon or soldier. This new technology that guarantees security against any intrusion is the future development to embrace the security of communications.
