Smart Plant is an intelligent pot that uses four sensors on domestic plants and uses emoticons to signal when there is a need for water or light
No more dry leaves! For gardening enthusiasts (especially those who are not too “experienced”) a special smart pot has been invented that monitors the vital functions of domestic plants and warns when water or light is needed. The device is called Smart Plant™ and can be purchased online for 19.90 euros. The pot is equipped with a tank that takes advantage of under-irrigation (irrigation from below) to give the plant all the water it needs. 4 sensors monitor the well-being of the plant: water level sensor, light sensor, motion sensor and temperature sensor. The peculiarity of Smart Plant™ is that the sensors communicate through emoticons. Thus, for example, when the outside temperature is too low, a cold face appears on the LED display of the pot. The developers have provided 6 different emoticons and each of them corresponds to a specific need of the plant: Thirst (water need), Sick (mould in the soil), Vampire (little light), Strabismus (too much light), Cold (outside temperature too low) and Hot (outside temperature too high).

With Smart Plant plants “speak” through emoticons
On the product presentation page, the authors of the project explain that each “plant has its own needs but unfortunately cannot communicate them in any way. So we designed Smart plant™, a device that allows you to transform your plant into a pet using sensors that communicate through 15 universal emotional animations. Smart plant™ measures soil mould, light exposure and temperature to keep the plant healthy. The smartphone app that manages the entire system is easy to set up and can be used on a daily basis. The system generates a QR code that can be read and interpreted immediately. With Smart plant™, your favourite plant becomes a virtual pet.
