The particular invention allows to improve the basketball players’ shot adapting to the level of precision of the athlete
Sport is practice and training with the ultimate goal of improving your skills. All children from an early age are passionate about sports, among the most popular team sports are soccer, basketball, and volleyball. The development of athletic and technical skills is constantly monitored by coaches who plan exercises according to the physical qualities of the players. In basketball, adaptation is managed by the height of the hoops and the type and weight of the balls used in practice and in games.
A research group of the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Lab of MIT, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, has designed a very curious basketball hoop. The researchers, coordinated by Prof. Stefanie Mueller, invented a basketball hoop that shrinks or expands during exercise. The system incorporates a piezoelectric pressure sensor that activates an electrical mechanism to which the circular iron is connected. The hoop recognizes the point of impact of the wedge ball and an attached software adapts the diameter of the hoop based on the outcome of the shots.
The computer also adjusts the height of the basket and gradually increases the difficulty of the exercise as time goes on. Tests conducted in the lab showed rapid improvement of the athletes, who were more likely to use the adaptive basket than a traditional one. The software also proved to be more reliable in assessing the technical level of the athlete, who often tends to overestimate or underestimate their own abilities. The basketball hoop will be equipped with additional sensors and cameras in the future to track more parameters and adapt to other aspects of training as well.
