Google has launched a new feature that, thanks to Augmented Reality, brings dinosaurs back to life on smartphone screens.
The project is the result of a partnership between Google, Universal Brand Development, Amblin Entertainment and Ludia. “To create the 3D dinosaurs, our concept artists first did a preliminary search to find out information about each creature,” explained Camilo Sanin, Ludia’s head of character creation. “Not only did we draw research from various forms of literature, but our artists also worked with paleontologists and the ‘Jurassic World’ team to make the animations as accurate and realistic as possible. Even the smallest details, such as irregularities in skin colour, are important. From a technical point of view, the developers also faced a new technical challenge: the enormous size of the dinosaurs. For this, an “auto-scale” function was developed that can automatically calculate the distance between the phone and the framed surface and resize the dinosaur so that it “fits” to the screen. If you tap on “Display real size”, the AR tracking technology automatically repositions the dinosaur to its original size.

How to see Google dinosaurs in Augmented Reality
The dinosaurs visible in AR are Tyrannosaurus Rex, Velociraptor, Triceratops, Spinosaurus, Stegosaurus, Brachiosaurus, Ankylosaurus, Dilophosaurus, Pteranodon and Parasaurolophus. Android users can search for the word “dinosaur” or the name of one of these species on the Google app or any browser and click on “View in 3D”. You can view 3D content on devices that work with Android 7 or ARCore enabled. On iOS, you need to search the Google app or Google.com with Chrome or Safari. 3D and AR content is available on devices with iOS 11 and above. You can also create AR videos – or recreate your favorite scenes from “Jurassic World” movies – with the recording option.
