In a track test at the Kennedy Space Center, the SSC Tuatara became the fastest production car in the world reaching the speed of 455 km/h
A new speed record has been added to the Guinness Book of Records. In a test run on the Kennedy Space Center track in Florida, the SSC Tuatara reached a record speed of 455.3 km/h. This is the highest speed ever recorded by the speedometer of a production car. Although very “exclusive” (only 100 were produced), the SSC Tuatara is not a prototype or a car modified to break speed records. It is a hypercar produced by the US company SSC North America starting in 2020. According to the price list, the car is equipped with a V8 engine capable of producing 1750 horsepower. It has a drag coefficient of 0.279, one of the lowest in the world. The car’s bodywork and chassis are made entirely of carbon fibre. Some parts particularly subject to wear – such as the suspension mounts and the engine – are reinforced with aluminium inserts. Thanks to these materials, the dry weight of the car is extremely low at around 1247 kg.

SSC Tuatara: the world’s fastest production car
To become the fastest production car in the world, the SSC Tuatara had to beat the record belonging to the Koenigsegg Agera RS. In 2017, the German car had reached an average speed of 447.2 km/h. Since then, SSC North America’s engineers and drivers have been working hard to “beat” their Koenigsegg colleagues. After a series of unsuccessful or disputed attempts, the SSC Tuatara finally broke the 450km/h wall in early 2020, becoming the first production car to achieve this Guinness World Record speed. An even more impressive record when you consider that the record-breaking hypercar was driven not by a professional driver but by its owner!
