Researchers at Northern Illinois University have created a cushion that eliminates the noise of snoring by generating sound waves of equal amplitude.
The husband who talks in his sleep or the girlfriend who snores in your ears will no longer be a problem! To ensure quiet nights for everyone, a team of researchers at Northern Illinois University have designed and built a pillow that eliminates the noise, even that of snoring. The prototype uses the same noise reduction systems (Active Noise Control) found in high-end music headphones. Inside the pillow is a noise cancellation system consisting of a main microphone, two “error” microphones and an adaptive filter. The main microphone detects noise from snoring (even if the sound does not exceed 30 decibels) while the two error microphones capture all other ambient noise. Once the noise pollution level is detected, the adaptive microphone creates an anti-noise signal through sound waves of the same length as the detected sound. The signal is then reproduced through two speakers located right inside the cushion.

The pillow that “eliminates” the noise of snoring
And here is the real news. Until now, noise cancellation systems were mounted inside the headboard of the bed or in the sheets and were often not very effective (because they were far from the ears of those who sleep). Installing the device directly into the pillow, on the other hand, results in much better performance. In tests so far, the system has recorded noise reductions of 31 decibels in the right ear and 30 decibels in the left. Under the same conditions, placement on the header produced noise reductions of “just” 22 and 21 decibels. In addition to being more effective, the anti-noise pillow is also intelligent. Researchers at Northern Illinois University have also developed an adaptive algorithm that detects changes in noise intensity (even during the same night, in some moments we snore more, in others less: it depends very much on the phase of sleep and the position in which you sleep) and automatically modifies the anti-noise signal. Sleep is guaranteed!
