Murata Manufacturing Co. and Teijin Frontier Co. joined forces and produced the first fabric that generates electricity when it moves and kills bacteria

The textile industry is experiencing a strong evolution, driven by environmental needs and the discovery of new technologies. A new push comes from the East, thanks to Murata Manufacturing Co. and Teijin Frontier Co. The two companies founded PIECLEX Co., a joint venture dedicated to the development, production and sale of an innovative fabric. PIECLEX fiber is the first in the world with piezoelectric properties, producing electricity when it is in motion.

The fiber exploits the movement of the wearer of the garment by converting it into electricity. The electricity spreads between the fibers thanks to the special structure of the yarn and kills bacteria that settle on the fabric during the day. The antimicrobial function also works as a deodorant because it also kills the bacteria responsible for the bad smell of sweat. The fibre is based on PLA (polylactic acid), a polymer obtained from the fermentation of some plants. Therefore, the product is eco-sustainable and biodegradable.
