Many children suffer from dyscalculia, a learning disorder that also affects the child’s self-esteem. As part of the Health Care Summer School organised by the Open Dot Lab, innovative gloves have been created for children with dyscalculia. The invention will be presented at the Maker Faire in Rome in October.
Sometimes in school age (7 – 11 years) the child can show learning disorders. One of these is dyscalculia. This learning defect affects the child’s mathematical abilities; in particular, it prevents the correct recognition of numbers and therefore the mathematical calculation. This inevitably affects the child’s self-esteem, and ultimately the overall growth of the individual.
The invention
Within the Health Care Summer School, researchers focused on providing learning support to children with dyscalculia. The result is called FI.CO, which stands for Fingers Counting. The gloves are constructed in a very simple way. On the back of the hand, the first 10 numbers are placed, while on the palm of the hand the results of the multiplications are interchangeable depending on the final result.
In this way, children can live with this disorder in a serene way, overcoming the state of psychological frustration inherent.
