Covid-19: the “hand-held” thermal bags for transporting vaccines

The Italian company Gio’Style has developed special thermal bags for the transport of vaccines against Covid-19: they can be carried by hand or loaded on a scooter

It is now official: the vaccines against Covid-19 have arrived. After the green light of the European Medicines Agency (EMA) to the product of Pfizer, the vaccination campaign is ready to start by the end of the year. In all EU member states, the first doses should be administered on December 27. The first to receive the vaccine will obviously be doctors, nurses, hospital staff and RSA patients. After them, it will be the turn of all EU citizens. To support this unprecedented “mass vaccination campaign”, there will be a need for political commitment, but also for technological advances never seen before. The Pfizer vaccine, for example, must be stored at a temperature of -80 degrees centigrade. A great challenge for those who must organize and manage the vaccinations of tens of millions of people. A “little help” could come from Gio’Style, an Italian company specialized in the production of plastic components for domestic and sanitary use. In fact, the company’s researchers have developed a system for the safe and easy transport of Covid-19 vaccines. These are hand-held containers very similar to the cooler bags we use in the summer or for picnics.

Covid-19: the thermal bags “hand” for transporting vaccines

Gio’Style, like many other companies around the world, has converted part of its production lines due to the health emergency. In recent months, the researchers of the company based in the province of Bergamo had the idea to develop real thermal bags for the transport of vaccines against Covid-19. The result is an insulating cube-shaped container, slightly larger than a pizza box and very light. The system meets all the rules for the handling of vaccines defined by pharmaceutical companies. Starting with the “polar” temperature necessary to preserve the integrity of the precious vials. Gio’Style technical department manager Christian Abbadini explained that the thermal bags “reach low temperatures thanks to the dry ice with which we fill the vaccine holder. This guarantees a thermal performance of about 26 hours, with an internal temperature between -80°C and -70°C. This is a product that can be transported by any means: from the car to the bicycle, even riders in the future could transport it from house to house. Remember – adds Abbadini – that it can be purchased by anyone, from the government agency to the general practitioner who has to take it to his patients”. The cooler bags are already available for purchase on Amazon (priced at 94.64 euros) and each can carry a maximum of 50 vials of vaccine.
