ESA has published the video game “Space For Children” to help children cope with Covid-19: free to download from all digital stores.
Covid-19 had a devastating impact on the entire planet. Entrepreneurs, the self-employed, pensioners, civil servants, professors and students have all been challenged by the pandemic. There is one age group that has paid a particularly high price but which is little talked about: children. Between closed schools and bans of various kinds, boys and girls have been deprived of many relationships and activities that are essential for their growth. In an attempt to curb this problem, many projects have been developed that make use of new technologies. One of the most interesting is the one launched a few days ago by ESA, the European Space Agency. The name of the project is “Space For Children” and it is an educational video game in which children between 7 and 12 years of age are the protagonists. Through interactive quizzes, puzzles and engaging challenges, the game teaches children how to deal with the Coronavirus without giving in to sadness or worry.

“Space for Children”: the video game against Covid-19
The star of “Space for Children” – which can be downloaded free of charge from major digital stores – is Spacy, a friendly mini robot against Covid-19. Under his guidance, children go on a fantastic space journey through new galaxies and educational discoveries. The ESA project uses the logic of edutainment, i.e. a form of entertainment aimed at both educating and entertaining. Within ‘Space For Children’ there are ‘hidden’ notions of physics, chemistry, astronomy, biology and medicine that every child can learn in a simple way. Almost without realising it! For example, a dot game explains to children what a tampon is and why they should wear a mask correctly when they leave the house. This project is the result of a partnership between the European Space Agency, the IRCCS Giannina Gaslini of Genoa and Hypex, an Italian startup specialising in video-interactivity. The final result is a very entertaining video game that can help children to face more serenely the difficult period we are all living.
