Junker is an app for smartphones that uses Artificial Intelligence to promote waste separation: just take a photo of the waste and you’ll know where to throw it away
Does the milk pack go in plastic or undifferentiated? Do the dirty pizza cartons go in the wet? There are questions no man can answer. And where Human Intelligence can’t go, only Artificial Intelligence can. That’s why Junker’s developers – an app dedicated to recycling – have developed an extra feature to help with proper waste disposal. The system uses Artificial Intelligence to identify the material to be disposed of and tell which trash can it should be thrown into. Operation is simple and intuitive. The user only has to frame what they don’t know where to throw away (even loose and unlabeled waste) with the smartphone’s camera. The app recognizes the object thanks to Artificial Intelligence and sends a notification with the indication for the correct disposal.

An app tells you where to dump the trash thanks to Artificial Intelligence
For now, the new Junker feature is only available in beta version in some Italian municipalities that have decided to join the test. “This artificial intelligence system is based on machine learning, i.e. machine learning”, explains Benedetta De Santis, CEO of Junko, the company that designed the Junker app in 2015. “Its starting point is a database of about one million images, which will gradually become more and more evolved thanks to the collaboration of users. They will be the masters themselves who will help the brain to learn and increase the precision in recognizing objects”.
